API key setup

Smart Pass supports OpenAI and Anthropic APIs. Choose one provider and set up your API key to start using AI features.

Why use your own AI provider?

  • ✓Full control: Choose any AI model you prefer (GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, etc.)
  • ✓Cost optimization: Select models based on your budget and performance needs
  • ✓Privacy: Your API keys stay on your machine — we never see them
  • ✓Flexibility: Switch between providers or models anytime

Tip: You only need to set up one provider. Switch between them later if you want to try another.

OpenAI API setup

Best for: Access to latest models like GPT-4o. Great if you want the most advanced capabilities and don't mind the pricing.

Step 1: Get your API key

  1. 1.Go to OpenAI API keys page
  2. 2.Sign in with your OpenAI account
  3. 3.Click "Create new secret key"
  4. 4.Copy the key (you won't be able to see it again)

Step 2: Add to Smart Pass

  1. 1.Open Smart Pass
  2. 2.Go to Settings → API Keys
  3. 3.Select "OpenAI" from the dropdown
  4. 4.Paste your API key
  5. 5.Click "Test connection" to verify

Tip: Set up billing limits in your OpenAI account to control costs.

Troubleshooting

Connection test failed

Check that your API key is correct and your account has credit or an active billing plan.

API errors during use

Make sure your account has sufficient balance. Both providers charge per token used.

Comparing providers

  • • OpenAI: More models to choose from (GPT-4, GPT-4o, etc.)
  • • Anthropic: Better for long-form tasks, often more affordable
Security

Your API keys are stored locally on your machine and never sent to our servers. Smart Pass only uses them to communicate directly with the provider's API.
